Hotkey Issues
Fix problems with the dictation hotkey not registering or conflicting with other apps.
Hotkey not working
If pressing your hotkey does nothing:
- Check the app is running. Vorn Voice runs in the background (system tray on macOS/Windows). Make sure it has not been quit.
- Check your shortcut. Open settings and verify the hotkey is set to what you expect.
- Check for conflicts. Another app may be using the same shortcut. Try a different key combination.
- Restart the app. Some system-level hotkey registrations require a restart.
macOS
Global hotkeys generally work everywhere on macOS. If your shortcut is captured by another app (e.g., Spotlight, Alfred, or a window manager), change the Vorn Voice shortcut to avoid the conflict.
Windows
Global hotkeys work in most situations. If the hotkey is not registering:
- Make sure no other app has claimed the same shortcut.
- Try running Vorn Voice as administrator if the hotkey only fails in elevated windows.
Linux
X11
Global hotkeys work on X11 the same way as macOS and Windows. If the hotkey is not registering, check that no desktop environment shortcut is using the same combination.
Wayland
Wayland restricts background apps from registering global hotkeys. Vorn Voice may not be able to capture the hotkey on Wayland compositors.
Workarounds:
- Use your desktop environment's custom shortcut settings to bind a key combination to a Vorn Voice command. The app provides a CLI command for this.
- Switch to toggle mode if hold mode is unreliable (some Wayland compositors do not report key release events to background apps).
- Try X11 session if available on your distribution.
Changing the hotkey
If your current shortcut is conflicting, pick a new one:
- Open settings.
- Click the hotkey field.
- Press the new key combination.
- The change saves immediately.
